The United Nations says nearly 180 children have been killed in military attacks targeting Iran in recent weeks, amid escalating regional tensions and expanding confrontations in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press conference at UN headquarters in New York City, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said that approximately 180 children had been killed as of Friday evening. According to the UN, 168 of those victims died in an attack that struck an Iranian primary school on February 28.

The UN spokesperson further reported that at least 20 schools across Iran have been damaged as a result of the strikes. In addition, 13 attacks targeting health facilities were documented on Thursday alone, raising growing concerns about the safety of civilian infrastructure and essential services.

Dujarric stressed that all unlawful attacks, both in the Middle East and elsewhere, result in significant suffering for civilians and pose serious risks to regional stability and the global economy.

He also relayed a call from the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, urging an immediate halt to escalation and the launch of serious diplomatic negotiations, warning that risks continue to grow as military operations persist.

In a related development, Dujarric said that more than 30,000 people from Lebanon have fled to Syria during the current week amid intensified military operations.

According to the UN briefing, military strikes against Iran began on February 28, reportedly carried out by Israel in coordination with the United States. The attacks have resulted in hundreds of deaths, including military commanders and security officials.
