Hindu mob vandalizes Wazirabad cemetery in Delhi, sparking widespread anger

A group led by self-proclaimed Hindu leader Satyam Pandit vandalized the Wazirabad cemetery in North Delhi, damaging graves, pouring petrol, and setting them on fire. The attack occurred during Holi, coinciding with Ramadan, when Muslims were observing fasts.
A video of the incident, widely shared on social media, shows the group smashing headstones, burning grave coverings, and shouting derogatory remarks about the deceased. The cemetery, managed by the Waqf Board, is also the subject of an ongoing high court case mandating fencing to protect the site.
Cemetery caretaker Mahfooz Khan confirmed the damage and said the police were immediately informed. Local residents and community members subsequently repaired the graves and replaced destroyed coverings.
This is reportedly not the first incident involving Pandit, who has previously posted videos inciting communal tension at the same cemetery. The attack has sparked calls from Muslim leaders and human rights groups for swift action against Pandit and his associates.
The Timarpur police have initiated an investigation, reviewing the video and interviewing witnesses. Meanwhile, the incident has heightened anxiety among Delhi’s Muslim community, with mosques requesting additional security and parents cautioning children in the area.
Rights groups warn such acts reflect rising religiously motivated violence and stress the need for government protection of minority communities.
