Millions of pilgrims approach Karbala to mark 15th of Shaban Ziyarah

Millions of pilgrims converged on the holy city of Karbala on Monday to commemorate the birth anniversary of Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) during the mid-Sha’ban pilgrimage, Iraqi authorities and local sources said.
Roads leading to Karbala witnessed massive inflows of visitors from across Iraq, as well as Arab and international pilgrims, heading toward the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon them both). Main routes into the city were filled with long processions of worshippers, many of whom traveled on foot in a solemn display of devotion.
Pilgrims described the occasion as one of deep spiritual significance, marking the anniversary of the birth of Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance), whom they regard as a symbol of hope, justice, and divine reform. Many said the commemoration represents an opportunity to reaffirm loyalty and renew a moral and spiritual commitment rooted in the values of justice and righteousness.
Several visitors noted that observing the occasion in Karbala carries particular meaning, as it connects the remembrance of Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him) with the legacy of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) at the site associated with one of the most influential reform movements in Islamic history.
In preparation for the pilgrimage, the Karbala provincial government announced the implementation of a comprehensive security and service plan. The measures aim to protect pilgrims, manage traffic flow, and provide essential services throughout the visit, ensuring that religious rituals can be performed safely and smoothly amid the large crowds.
