SDF Says Al-Shaddadi Prison No Longer Under Its Control

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Monday that Al-Shaddadi prison, south of Hasakah, has slipped out of their control following sustained attacks. The facility holds thousands of detainees accused of belonging to the Islamic State group, raising concerns over a serious security breach in the area.

In a statement, the SDF said the prison was targeted by repeated assaults beginning early in the day, which its fighters repelled several times at the cost of dozens of casualties. Despite these efforts, the group said the intensity of the attacks ultimately led to the loss of control over the facility.

The SDF also noted that the prison is located about two kilometres from an international coalition base but said no intervention occurred despite repeated calls. Earlier reports said armed groups attacked the prison’s perimeter, triggering heavy clashes. The SDF warned that the attackers bear responsibility for any potentially catastrophic consequences resulting from the situation.
