NCAI condemns attack targeting a Muslim lawyer

The National Council of Imams of Australia (NCAI) has strongly condemned a verbal and physical attack targeting a Muslim lawyer as she traveled to work, IQNA reported. The Council described the incident as a dangerous manifestation of rising Islamophobia in the country.

According to the source, the attack on Sibat Sheikh, a prominent Muslim lawyer, illustrates the direct consequences of provocative political rhetoric and negative media narratives accumulated over the years. This rhetoric has contributed to the stigmatization of Muslims and made them more vulnerable to direct attacks.

In a statement released today, December 10, on its official Facebook page, the Council clarified that the victim reported the incident on December 22. Following the assault, she contacted the police, and the case was officially registered as part of efforts to protect victims and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.

The NCAI emphasized that this act was not an isolated incident, but part of a series of hate-motivated attacks recently observed in Australia, particularly following the Bondi attack on a Jewish religious gathering. The Muslim community has been unfairly held collectively responsible, exacerbating a climate of incitement and hostility.

Australian Muslim leaders have warned that the escalating violence poses a direct threat to social peace and religious coexistence. They have called for a firm response to hate speech, the promotion of mutual respect, and the protection of the rights of religious minorities.

The Council stressed the importance of reporting any discriminatory acts or religiously motivated attacks, emphasizing that documenting these incidents is essential to providing legal and psychological support to victims and fostering lasting changes within society.
