Dozens Killed in Myanmar Paraglider Strike as U.N. Presses Global Response on Rohingya Atrocities

Dozens of civilians were reportedly killed in Sagaing Region on October 7 after an armed paraglider allegedly carried out an aerial attack on villages, in one of the deadliest recent escalations in Myanmar. The assault came as the U.N. convened a rights forum spotlighting widespread atrocities across the nation.

According to Al Jazeera, the paraglider struck multiple settlements, including Hkamti Township, destroying homes and killing an undetermined number of villagers. Local media and civil society groups reported that the attack came without warning and was carried out during daylight hours, adding to fears over the growing use of novel tactics by Myanmar’s military regime.

In parallel, a United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting addressed persistent persecution in Myanmar, especially facing the Rohingya, Kachin, and Chin communities. The International Commission of Inquiry on Myanmar delivered its findings, documenting mass killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and the systematic destruction of civilian areas. U.N. and NGO speakers appealed for stronger global action, humanitarian access, and accountability mechanisms, as reported by International Christian Concern and persecution.org.

Also, Arab News reports that the U.S. and European states are increasing diplomatic pressure on Myanmar’s junta, with threats of additional sanctions and arms embargoes. In a related case, the U.K. froze assets belonging to senior military leaders tied to human rights abuses.

Food rations stopped, causing starvation, malnutrition, and deaths of kids as young as 2 years old. Families now forage in jungles or fish for meager meals. Aid workers report shuttered safehouses and collapsing health services. Despite official denials, survivors blame US funding cuts for worsening crises. Many fear continued aid loss will lead to more suffering and deaths among vulnerable populations.

Observers say the paraglider strike underscores the urgency of the U.N. gathering’s message: the conflict in Myanmar continues to evolve and expand, while citizens remain trapped in cycles of displacement and death. Without urgent international enforcement, analysts fear the crackdown will deepen, with yet more communities targeted in remote border regions.
