Tens of Thousands Protest Across Italy Against Gaza War
……………..
Tens of thousands of people staged demonstrations in dozens of Italian cities on Monday, disrupting daily life with strikes, road blockages and port closures, media outlets reported. The protests were among the largest in Europe against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Grassroots unions called a 24-hour general strike, accusing the Italian and EU governments of failing to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Demonstrations took place in at least 75 municipalities, including Rome, Milan, Genoa and Palermo. Dock workers in Genoa and Livorno blocked ports, voicing concern that Italian facilities were being used to transfer weapons to Israel.
In Rome, more than 20,000 people rallied outside the main train station waving Palestinian flags. Organisers said 50,000 joined in Milan, where clashes erupted when protesters tried to storm the central station, throwing smoke bombs and stones. Police responded with pepper spray, while in Bologna water cannon were deployed.
Authorities reported more than 10 arrests in Milan and dozens of police injuries. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, stressing that destruction “will not change anything” in Gaza. Her government has voiced concern over civilian casualties but remains cautious on recognising Palestinian statehood.
