Italian coast guards rescue 46 migrants stranded on rocks of Lampedusa Island

Italy’s Coast Guard rescued 46 irregular migrants stranded on the rocks of Lampedusa Island after crossing the Mediterranean, Anadolu Agency reported.

The migrants, reported to be Pakistani and Egyptian nationals, were found at the western edge of Lampedusa. One migrant was found dead during the operation, the news outlet revealed.

The number of irregular migrants arriving in Italy by sea since Jan. 1 has reached 4,979, a decrease from 15,107 during the same period last year.

The Central Mediterranean route between Italy, Malta, Libya, and Tunisia has been a prominent route for irregular migration to Europe.
