The Taliban has barred Afghan universities from teaching books authored by women, according to a BBC report. The restriction is part of a list of 679 titles deemed contrary to Islamic law and government policies, including around 140 written by female authors.

A member of the literature review committee, speaking anonymously, said all books by women are now prohibited for academic use. The new regulations also remove 18 subjects from curricula, six of which specifically focus on women.

The move adds to a growing list of restrictions since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, including banning women from higher education and teaching, mandating face coverings in public, and limiting women’s voices on local radio programs. The latest decision has heightened concerns about the future of education and free expression in Afghanistan.
