Iraq has inaugurated the first phase of the Karbala solar power plant, delivering 75 megawatts of electricity, with full capacity expected to reach 300 megawatts. The project marks the country’s first national solar facility directly connected to the power grid.

Officials said the initiative is part of Iraq’s plan to boost renewable energy to 12% of total production by 2030, in line with global efforts to cut carbon emissions and promote sustainability.

The Karbala plant is expected to supply electricity to thousands of homes and ease pressure on the national grid, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. Energy experts view the project as a milestone that could pave the way for broader investment in renewables and strengthen Iraq’s energy security.
