Islamophobia in Australia Skyrockets Since Gaza War
—————————
An independent report has found that Islamophobic incidents in Australia have skyrocketed since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, with anti-Muslim incidents increasing by 150% in person and 250% online.
According to a report from Al Jazeera, the findings were released by Aftab Malik, the government’s special envoy to combat Islamophobia. His report highlights that the normalization of Islamophobia in Australia has become so widespread that many incidents go unreported. The document makes 54 recommendations, including a review of counterterrorism laws and a wide-ranging inquiry into the drivers of Islamophobia.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that the government will “carefully consider” the recommendations, emphasizing that targeting Australians based on their religious beliefs is an attack on the country’s core values. The report notes that both Islamophobic and anti-Semitic incidents have seen a steep rise in the country since the conflict began.
