Europeans Feel “Humiliated” by Trump Trade Deal
——————-
A recent survey conducted by pollster Cluster 17 reveals that a majority of Europeans feel “humiliated” by a new trade agreement with the United States, Anadolu Agency reported. The survey, which included 5,302 respondents from five EU countries, found that 52% described humiliation as their primary reaction to the “Turnberry customs deal.” This sentiment was particularly high in France (65%) and Spain (56%).
The poll showed widespread public dissatisfaction with the agreement, with 77% of respondents believing it would primarily benefit the American economy. Additionally, 42% of those surveyed felt that European companies would be the most harmed by the deal. The survey also indicated a significant lack of confidence in European leadership, with 75% believing that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “poorly defended” European interests during the negotiations. As a result, 60% favored her resignation.
The findings also point to a rise in Euroscepticism, particularly in France and Germany, suggesting that support for the EU is “conditional.” A notable 44% of respondents viewed the U.S. President as an “enemy of Europe,” with the most hostility seen in Spain and France. Overall, 77% expressed dissatisfaction with the EU’s management of its relationship with Washington, and a significant portion (39%) preferred outright opposition to the U.S. government.
