Over 10,000 Killed in Syria in Nine Months Amid Rising Violence

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Sunday that more than 10,672 people have been killed in Syria over the past nine months, following the collapse of the former regime. The monitoring group said widespread violence and instability have fueled the bloodshed, with 3,020 victims executed in what it described as “brutal” field killings.

According to the report, civilian deaths accounted for 8,180 of the total, including 438 children and 620 women. Causes of death ranged from random gunfire, arbitrary arrests, and enforced disappearances to airstrikes and shelling carried out by government forces, armed factions, and ISIS. Additional fatalities were linked to Israeli airstrikes, Turkish bombardment, and remnants of war.

The Observatory also documented 883 civilians killed by the Military Operations Administration, among them 24 children and 58 women, as well as 56 men who died under torture in detention.
Non-civilian fatalities totaled 2,492, including 1,034 members of the Military Operations Administration. The group warned that systematic killings and executions were deepening sectarian and regional divisions across the country.

The report highlighted the lack of accountability, noting that official investigative committees have failed to produce credible findings while mass killings continued in provinces such as Homs and Sweida. Thousands of detainees remain held without trial or charges. The Observatory urged both local and international actors to act swiftly to protect civilians, curb sectarian incitement, and establish genuine transitional justice mechanisms to ensure accountability and pave the way toward stability.
