Malaysian State to Penalize Muslim Men for Missing Friday Prayers

Muslim men in Terengganu, a Malaysian state, could face up to two years in prison, fines up to RM 3,000 (£525), or both for skipping Friday prayers without a valid reason, media outlets reported. The enforcement falls under the Shariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment law, marking a shift from the previous rule, which penalized only those missing three consecutive Friday prayers.

Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, a member of the state executive council, emphasized that Friday prayers are both a religious duty and an expression of obedience among Muslims. He noted that punishment would only be imposed as a last resort after repeated reminders. Authorities plan to raise awareness through mosque banners and public campaigns, with violations potentially reported by the public or discovered during patrols.

Terengganu, governed by the conservative Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), is part of a broader push by the party to implement stricter interpretations of Islamic law. Malaysia operates a dual legal system, with Shariah covering personal and family matters for Muslims alongside civil law. PAS has previously advocated harsher religious penalties, including hudud laws, which drew controversy nationwide. The announcement has sparked debate on social media, with critics arguing that awareness programs may be a more appropriate approach than criminalizing religious observance.
