Somalia: Over 100 Al-Shabaab Terrorists Killed in Military Operation

According to a report from Anadolu Agency, a security official stated on Monday that over 100 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in an operation by the Somali military’s elite Danab unit. The operation, which involved airstrikes, took place in areas near the town of Awdhegle in the Lower Shabelle region, beginning on Sunday night and continuing into the early hours of Monday.

The state-run Somali National News Agency (SONNA) also reported that the operation destroyed tunnels and hideouts used by the terrorists. The Somali army, supported by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has intensified its operations against the al-Qaeda-affiliated group in the Lower Shabelle region since July.

Somalia’s Information Minister, Daud Aweis, said in a statement that “multifront operations” by the Somali National Forces and their local allies have “yield decisive progress.” He added that more than 150 terrorists were killed, several towns were liberated, and one terrorist was captured alive with weapon caches seized. The government of Somalia remains committed to eradicating terrorism, which has been an insurgency for over 16 years, regularly targeting security forces, government officials, and civilians.
