According to a report by top UN human rights investigators, a wave of violence in predominantly Alawite areas of Syria may have included acts that constitute war crimes. The report, as detailed by Shafaq News, documented killings, torture, and the inhumane treatment of the dead.

The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, led by Chair Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, stated that the scale and brutality of the violence were “extremely alarming.” The report also noted that bodies were left in the streets for days, preventing families from performing proper burials, and that there was widespread looting and burning of homes.

The article mentions that a Syrian investigative committee, formed by the Syrian government, documented 930 testimonies and confirmed the deaths of 1,426 individuals, including both civilians and former military personnel.
