US Revokes Over 6,000 Student Visas for Law Violations and Security Concerns
……………….
The US State Department has revoked more than 6,000 visas issued to international students due to violations of American law and overstays, according to a report by the BBC. Officials said the majority of cases involved criminal offenses such as assault, driving under the influence, and burglary, while a smaller number were linked to alleged support for terrorism.
Around 4,000 revocations were tied to students breaking the law, while 200–300 were classified under the Immigration and Nationality Act’s terrorism provisions, which define terrorist activity broadly as actions that endanger human life or breach US law.
The move is part of the Trump administration’s wider immigration enforcement measures. Earlier this year, the government temporarily paused visa appointments for international students before resuming them in June with new requirements, including public disclosure of social media accounts for enhanced screening.
Officers were instructed to flag applicants showing hostility toward US citizens, institutions, or values, and to monitor for connections to designated terrorist groups or antisemitic violence. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers in May that “thousands” of visas had already been rescinded and more could follow. Critics, particularly Democrats, have argued the policy undermines due process.
