Indonesians Protest with Anime Pirate Flag on Independence Day

In a striking display of dissent on the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence from Dutch colonial rule, a protest movement has emerged, rallying around a pirate flag from the Japanese anime series One Piece, Al Jazeera reported. The flag, featuring a skull and crossbones with a straw hat, has been seen on homes, vehicles, and boats across the country.

The protest is fueled by a growing public frustration with the government over issues such as rising prices and job scarcity. A lecturer at Airlangga University, Radityo Dharmaputra, told Al Jazeera that the use of the satirical symbol reflects “growing dissatisfaction” despite the government’s claims of progress.

Government officials have warned that they will take “firm action” against anyone flying the flag on Independence Day, stating it disrespects the national flag. However, critics suggest this stance has “backfired spectacularly,” making the government appear out of touch. The movement reportedly originated with truck drivers protesting a regulation on overweight vehicles.
