Portuguese Court Orders Expulsion of Asylum Seekers from Morocco

A Portuguese court has ordered the expulsion of 38 Moroccan nationals—25 men, six women, and seven children—who arrived by boat on the Algarve coast, Africanews reported. The court in Silves ruled that the migrants must return to their country of origin.
The group, which landed in a small wooden boat, will be repatriated. They have been given 20 days to leave the country voluntarily, after which they will be forcibly expelled. They are being held in custody and temporarily housed in a pavilion in Sagres.
Following the judge’s decision, Portugal’s Minister for the Presidency, Leitão Amaro, congratulated the authorities for their “speed of justice” and assured the public that the country’s “maritime borders” are secure.
