Extreme Weather and Monsoon Floods Devastate Children’s Education in Asia
——————————–
Monsoon floods and extreme weather across Asia have had a severe impact on children, with more than 130 children killed and educational facilities being destroyed, according to a report from ReliefWeb. The report highlights that Asia is the world’s most climate and weather disaster-prone region, facing not only floods but also droughts and severe heatwaves.
The devastating weather events have led to widespread destruction of homes and schools, leaving families displaced and children without access to education. In the Philippines, a series of tropical cyclones has destroyed approximately 1,350 classrooms, while over 200 schools are being used as emergency evacuation centers, further limiting learning spaces.
Similarly, in Pakistan’s most populated province of Punjab, over a quarter of all schools have been either partially or completely damaged. Schools in both Thailand and Bangladesh have also reported significant flood damage and are being used as shelters. The report underscores the profound effect on children, citing the experience of a 10-year-old girl from the Philippines whose school supplies were ruined, causing her anxiety about returning to class.
