Mudslide in Northern India Kills Four, Dozens Missing in Uttarakhand
………………..
A powerful mudslide swept through a village in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, leaving at least four people dead and more than 50 missing, according to local officials and media reports on August 5, as reported by Reuters.
The disaster struck Dharali village in Uttarkashi district, where heavy floodwaters and mud surged down the mountainside, destroying homes and roads. Dramatic footage showed residents fleeing as debris overwhelmed the settlement.
Emergency teams from the Indian Army and disaster response agencies have arrived at the scene, working to rescue those trapped under the rubble. Some residents have already been pulled to safety, according to district administrator Prashant Arya.
Uttarakhand frequently experiences floods and landslides, hazards increasingly linked to climate change. In 2021, flash floods in the state claimed around 200 lives and destroyed major hydroelectric projects. The region’s melting glaciers remain a growing concern.
