Khuzestan Launches Traditional Muharram Rituals at Chazabeh Border for Arbaeen Pilgrims
…………………
The Khuzestan Cultural Heritage Department has announced the implementation of traditional Muharram mourning rituals in Chazabeh, a southwestern border city in Iran, as part of its efforts to preserve intangible cultural heritage and enhance regional identity.
Deputy head Tabar Qarib Mombeini stated that daily group performances of Arbaeen rituals will begin on August 6 at the border’s zero point. These include registered rituals such as the Tazieh passion play, which has been listed on Iran’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
With Khuzestan being a major corridor for Arbaeen pilgrims, the province is also preparing extensive services at border crossings, including Shalamcheh and Chazabeh. These include Mawakib—religious service centers offering free food, rest, and cultural displays—as well as booths showcasing local handicrafts.
Qarib Mombeini emphasized that tourism facilities across the province are fully mobilized to accommodate the large influx of pilgrims. Continuous monitoring, service coordination, and facility upgrades are underway to ensure quality support. He highlighted Arbaeen as a unique opportunity to present Khuzestan’s spiritual and cultural heritage to millions of visitors from Iran and abroad.
