Muslim Healthcare Employees in Australia Face Rising Islamophobia, Study Finds
—————————-
A recent national study in Australia has revealed a troubling rise in Islamophobic abuse against Muslim healthcare workers, with significant psychological consequences, Iqna.ir reported.

Conducted in 2024 by Australian universities and the Australian Islamic Medical Association, the survey included 358 healthcare professionals, predominantly Muslim and from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. The findings highlight widespread religious and racial discrimination within medical settings, affecting workers regardless of faith but disproportionately impacting Muslim staff, especially women.

These workers face compounded discrimination related to gender, religious identity, and appearance, leading to diminished confidence and mental health challenges. Experts warn that persistent Islamophobia may drive Muslim healthcare professionals out of the workforce, particularly in underserved and remote areas, risking patient care quality. The Australian Islamic Medical Association and medical leaders are calling for urgent systemic reforms and enhanced mental health support to protect these essential workers and ensure equitable healthcare delivery across communities.
