India Enforces Curfew in Nagpur Amid Clashes Over Mughal Emperor ‘s Tomb

Authorities in Nagpur have imposed an indefinite curfew following violent clashes triggered by demands from the Hindu group Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) for the removal of the tomb of 17th-century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Reuters reported. The unrest, which erupted on March 17, resulted in injuries to over a dozen police officers and significant property damage.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the violence, calling for strict measures to maintain law and order. In a statement, the VHP denied engaging in violence, asserting their desire to replace Aurangzeb’s tomb with a memorial for local Maratha rulers.

Tensions escalated when members of Muslim groups reportedly clashed with police, throwing stones and wielding weapons. The situation has raised concerns about rising sectarian tensions in India, with critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing his government of failing to protect Muslim communities amid increasing hostility.
