Pakistan Military Court Passes Up-to-10-year Imprisonments to 60 Civilians

A Pakistani military court sentenced 60 civilians to prison terms ranging from 2 to 10 years for their involvement in attacks on military facilities following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in May 2023, Reuters reported yesterday.

Among those sentenced were a relative of Khan and two retired military officers. This decision comes after 25 others received similar sentences just days prior.

The military’s media wing emphasized its commitment to justice and maintaining the state’s authority. However, the sentencing has raised concerns among Khan’s supporters about the increasing role of military courts in politically sensitive cases.

International reactions included expressions of concern from the United States and the United Kingdom, which criticized the lack of transparency in military trials. The information minister defended the process, stating that defendants have access to legal representation and the right to appeal. Khan and his supporters maintain that the charges are politically motivated.

The military and government have denied any unfair treatment of Khan or his supporters.
