US Unveils New AI Strategy for National Security
On Thursday, October 24, President Joe Biden announced a groundbreaking National Security Memorandum (NSM) aimed at positioning the United States as a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) while safeguarding human rights and privacy, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
The memo outlines strategies to enhance semiconductor supply chains, integrate AI into government technologies, and prioritize intelligence on foreign AI advancements.
Biden emphasized the need for the US to outpace adversaries and address potential threats from AI misuse. The directive mandates agencies to monitor AI-related risks, including privacy invasions and discrimination, and to collaborate with allies to ensure AI development adheres to international law.
This initiative follows previous efforts, including an executive order last year to mitigate AI risks. A global safety summit on AI is scheduled for next month in San Francisco, where nations will discuss regulatory frameworks and policy coordination.
