Militia Kills 10 Civilians in Eastern Congo
A midnight attack by the CODECO militia in Ituri province resulted in the deaths of ten civilians, Reuters reported yesterday.
Local officials reported that the assault targeted a village in Djugu territory, predominantly inhabited by the Hema community. Witnesses stated that some victims were decapitated and mutilated.
Jean Marie Mateso, head of local administration, expressed concerns over potential further attacks, noting the incident occurred near a Congolese military position.
CODECO, one of many militias in the region, has faced accusations from the United Nations for previous assaults on various communities, raising fears of ongoing violence. As of Tuesday morning, the bodies remained at the scene.
