Global Energy Summit to Address Deadly Unhealthy Cooking Habits
World leaders will convene in Paris this week for an energy summit focused on expanding access to clean cooking methods, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
The summit, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), aims to raise billions in funding to provide 250 million Africans with clean cooking solutions by 2030.
According to the IEA, 2.3 billion people globally use polluting fuels like wood and charcoal for cooking, resulting in 3.7 million premature deaths annually, mainly women and children.
Switching to clean cooking could save 1.5 billion tons of CO2 per year, the source mentioned.
However, the needed investment of $4 billion is just a fraction of global energy spending. Experts say this represents an opportunity for immense health, climate, and development benefits.
