Heavy winter storms leave hundreds of guillemots dead on French beaches
Over 500 common guillemot seabirds have been discovered dead on French Atlantic beaches, exhausted by unusually heavy winter storms that prevent them from feeding, Reuters reported.
According to experts from French League for Birds (LPO), guillemot beachings happen regularly in winter, but not to the scale of the past weeks. Scientists say it is likely the birds perished from exhaustion due to difficult conditions at sea.
Climate change, overfishing, poisoning by micro plastics and chemical contamination affecting fish sources have contributed hand-in-hand to this environmental disaster, experts say.
