Amazon rainforest could face ‘tipping point’ by 2050, scientists warn
A study has shown that up to half of the Amazon rainforest could reach a tipping point by 2050 due to water stress, land clearance, and climate disruption, the Guardian reported.
The new study, published in Nature, calls for urgent action needed to restore degraded areas and improve ecosystem resilience.
By 2050, it projects that between 10% and 47% of Amazonian forests will experience compounding disturbances, which could potentially lead to unforeseen ecosystem-wide shifts and negatively impact regional climate patterns.
The study emphasizes the need to reduce CO2 emissions and prevent excessive deforestation to protect the Amazon and its importance for biodiversity and global climate stability.
