Turkey’s Shias celebrate the opening of the new and renovated Lady Zainab Mosque
The Turkish capital, Istanbul, witnessed the opening of the new Lady Zainab Mosque, which includes religious and social services and can accommodate 10,000 worshippers.
The blessed mosque, whose exterior design was inspired by the mausoleum of Lady Zainab Holy Shrine in Damascus, was built on an area of 70,000 square meters, topped by two minarets and a golden dome, as well as small golden domes spread on the upper roof.
The organizers of the work said in a statement: “The Mosque of Lady Zainab, peace be upon her, was built on the European side of Istanbul, specifically in the Shia (Halqali) neighborhood, and it was completed to provide religious and social services.”
Shia Waves News Agency has previously published details of the construction project of the Zainabi Mosque, which it obtained from the mosque’s website.
According to sources, “the Shias had previously built a mosque in the name of Lady Zainab, peace be upon her, that was built modestly in the year 1978 and was named after the sacrifices of the heroine of al-Taff – Lady Zainab, peace be upon her.”
On August 17, 1999, the mosque was severely damaged due to the destruction caused by the Marmara earthquake, and it was temporarily moved to a nearby place.
In the year 2009, it was planned to build a mosque with a new look and impressive design, by collecting donations by the followers of Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, in Turkey, which is what has become today the Mosque of Lady Zainab, peace be upon her, as it was built on an area of 70,000 square meters, after acquiring many buildings and real estate surrounding the land.
The mosques include a large prayer hall that can accommodate more than 10,000 worshippers, as well as a banquet hall, a guest house, administrative rooms and health facilities.
