Two Earthquakes Strike Turkey Within 24 Hours, Leaving One Dead and Dozens Injured

The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported that a magnitude 6.19 earthquake struck the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir province in western Turkey on Sunday evening at 19:53 local time, at a depth of 10 kilometers. According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake was felt in several provinces, including Istanbul.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that one person was killed and around 30 others were injured. Sixteen buildings collapsed, and damage was reported in multiple areas. Witnesses described the tremor as strong, causing panic among residents.

On Monday morning, AFAD recorded another earthquake measuring 3.2 in Etimesgut, west of Ankara, at a depth of 4.6 kilometers. The tremor was felt in nearby districts, including Çankaya, home to the state television headquarters.

No casualties or damage were reported from the second quake. Authorities continue rescue operations and damage assessments, warning of possible aftershocks.
