Sudanese Army Allegedly Liberated RSF-Held Wad Madani

The Sudanese military announced its forces have entered Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazira state, previously controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Arab News reported. This development follows over a year of RSF dominance in the city.

The Sudanese armed forces congratulated the nation in a statement, sharing footage of fighters claiming to be inside Wad Madani. Reports indicate that the army stormed the city’s eastern entrance, with eyewitnesses confirming the military’s presence throughout the streets.

Since the onset of conflict in April 2023, the war between the Sudanese army and RSF has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with the UN labeling it the world’s worst displacement crisis. An estimated 12 million people have been uprooted, and tens of thousands have lost their lives. As celebrations erupted in army-controlled areas, the situation remains precarious amid a communications blackout, hindering independent verification of developments on the ground.
