Famine Confirmed in Sudan as Conflict Hits 500 Days: Urgent Call for Global Action

As the conflict in Sudan approaches 500 days, the UN’s World Food Program (WFP) has confirmed the first famine globally since 2017 in the Zamzam camp for internally displaced persons in North Darfur, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

According to the article, over 25.6 million people face acute hunger, with 8.5 million in emergency levels. WFP officials have emphasized the urgent need for international attention and an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent famine from spreading.

The situation has worsened due to ongoing violence, macroeconomic crises, and climate disasters, leading to a 41% drop in staple crop production last year. Farmers are unable to access land or afford essential supplies.

WFP has warned that if the conflict continues, hunger levels will rise, resulting in more hunger-related deaths. The international organization faces immense challenges in delivering aid due to insecurity and bureaucratic obstacles. It has called for increased global diplomatic efforts and funding to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
