More than 100 Visitors Learn About Islam During “Open Mosque Day” in New York

The Islamic Center in Melville, New York, USA, hosted more than 100 visitors as part of the “Open Mosque Day” initiative. This event aimed to introduce Islam and Islamic culture, as well as to enhance communication and understanding between Muslims and various components of the local community.

The event was organized in collaboration with the “Gain Peace” project, during which the center opened its doors to local residents. They were invited to tour its facilities and learn about its activities and programs. Additionally, they were able to explore the new community center, which spans approximately 45,000 square feet and is nearing completion.

Sally Hassan, the vice president of the mosque, stated that the event aims to provide community members with the opportunity to get acquainted with the center, its management, and its attendees. She noted that the center offers diverse programs for families and various age groups, including Sunday schools, educational camps, and community activities.

The event featured a speech by Dr. Sabeel Ahmed, the executive director of the “Gain Peace” project, who highlighted aspects of Islamic history and culture. He also addressed questions from the attendees to introduce Islamic principles and values and to correct misconceptions.

Ahmed clarified that the project participates in organizing similar events in several U.S. states, with the goal of introducing non-Muslims to Islam and building bridges of dialogue and understanding among different segments of society.

Furthermore, the organizers distributed English-translated copies of the Quran to the visitors, along with brochures covering the top fifty questions and answers about Islam. The guided tour included the prayer halls, classrooms, event hall, and various facilities within the center.

In a similar vein, the Islamic Center in Hillside, New Hyde Park, organized an open educational event on the same day, in collaboration with the Islamic Circle of North America branch in New York. This was part of the efforts by Islamic institutions to enhance community communication and raise awareness about Islam.
