Netherlands Moves to Ban Trade in Goods from Illegal Israeli Settlements
——————————–
The Dutch government has moved to ban trade in goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories and the Syrian Golan Heights, in a step aimed at preventing Dutch economic activity from supporting unlawful occupation.
The Dutch government said on May 22 that it had decided to submit a sanctions decree to the Council of State for urgent advice. The measure would prohibit Dutch individuals and legal entities from importing, buying, selling, or providing intermediary services related to goods from illegal Israeli settlements. It would also ban attempts to circumvent these restrictions.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten said the decision was intended to increase pressure on the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to uphold international law. He said the Netherlands would continue to speak out against violations of international law and in favour of humanitarian aid.
The Dutch government said the Israeli occupation is unlawful under the view of the International Court of Justice and the Dutch cabinet, adding that the measure is intended to ensure that the Netherlands does not contribute to maintaining an unlawful situation. The decree also applies to goods from illegal settlements in the Syrian Golan Heights.
