India: Muslim delegations in Meerut seek night markets, retention of mosque loudspeakers ahead of Ramadan

Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims delegations in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut have called for the administration to permit markets operating at night and retention of loudspeakers, especially in Muslim localities.
The delegation urged that the permission for shops, stalls and hotels to remain open late at night in Ramadan which is set to begin on February 18 or 19.
The delegation also stressed the need for electricity and water supply without interruption throughout the month which would make religious activities easier for Muslims.
Speaking at the meeting, Rashiduddin said, “Ramadan is a month of worship, fasting and community gatherings. For the convenience of the people, night-time markets, uninterrupted supply of water and electricity is needed.”
According to Dr VK Singh there has been no special discussion on loudspeakers. He said that all arrangements will be made according to the guidelines issued by the administration he said, “The existing laws will continue. Any administrative action is bound by laws that are already in motion.”
Addressing media, he said represented the voice of Muslims impacted by the restrictions on loudspeakers. He said, “Without loudspeakers, it is challenging for us to inform the timings for starting and breaking the fast,” requesting the administration to retain the orders.
A memorandum has also been submitted by the community leaders urging for cleaning drives before Ramadan, repair of street lights especially around Shahi Jama Masjid including deployment of police personnel at prominent mosques during late night prayers.
Local Muslims also assert that these demands are necessary for ease during Ramadan when people fast and dedicate hours in worship.
