A woman Ayurvedic doctor was briefly detained by Uttar Pradesh Police for allegedly uploading an edited video on social media pertaining to the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition, an act authorities claimed could disturb communal harmony on its anniversary.
According to Muslim Mirror, Dr Sheeba Khan, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) practitioner running a clinic in Abdullapur village under Mawana police station area of Meerut district, was taken into custody on Sunday evening.
Police acted after the video surfaced during intensified social media monitoring on December 6 – the date that marks both the demolition of the 16th-century Babri mosque in Ayodhya by karsevaks in 1992 and the day observed by Hindu groups as Shaurya Diwas (Day of Valour) and by Muslim organisations as Youm-e-Gham (Day of Sorrow) or Black Day.
A technical examination of the video is currently underway, and further action will depend on the forensic report, officials said.
Local administration has increased vigilance in the area to prevent rumour-mongering and maintain law and order. No unrest has been reported so far.
