UN Warns of Potential Floods Threatening Millions of Displaced in Sudan
——————————————–
The United Nations has warned that millions of internally displaced persons in Sudan face increasing humanitarian risks as the rainy season approaches, with the potential for widespread flooding that could worsen the ongoing crisis.
A joint statement by UN agencies managing camps and shelters reported that approximately 6.9 million displaced people are at risk of floods across 183 areas, with hazard levels ranging from moderate to extremely high. About four million people live in 1,195 sites in 163 highly vulnerable regions, prompting urgent calls for preparatory measures, including reinforcing shelters, improving camp infrastructure, and pre-positioning humanitarian aid.
The agencies emphasized that emergency shelter and non-food assistance have been prioritized for 1.6 million of the 1.8 million targeted individuals, while over 15.4 million people currently require such aid. Funding gaps threaten disaster preparedness programs, early-warning systems, and the effectiveness of humanitarian response.
Sudan continues to face a deepening humanitarian crisis following prolonged conflict, which has displaced millions internally and abroad, while challenges in food, health, and housing persist. The upcoming rainy season is expected to test the resilience of affected communities and aid organizations.
