Afghan Refugees in Germany Face Discrimination and Financial Instability

A recent survey by the Berlin-based Advisory Council on Integration and Migration highlights the challenges faced by Afghan refugees in Germany, particularly in the housing market, Khaama Press reported yesterday.

Polling around 1,900 refugees, the study reveals that many experience discrimination linked to their financial situations, with those facing instability feeling less connected to German society.

Conducted online between November 2023 and April 2024, the survey indicates that while many Afghan refugees are in the early stages of integration, a significant 68% do not wish to return to Afghanistan in the next five to ten years. Only 4% expressed a desire to return during that period. The ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, marked by conflict and food insecurity, exacerbates these sentiments.

Respondents identified key challenges, including family reunification, language acquisition, residency status, and housing. Over 70% maintain regular contact with family members still in Afghanistan, reflecting their deep ties to their homeland. As many Afghan refugees navigate life in Germany, they face ongoing financial instability and discrimination, underscoring the urgent need for sustained international support and long-term solutions for those seeking asylum.
