Syria: Protests over living conditions as UN Security Council voices concern over Sweida situation

Damascus and several Syrian provinces have witnessed public protests over deteriorating living conditions, rising fuel prices and declining public services, as the UN Security Council discussed the country’s political, economic and humanitarian situation.
In Damascus, demonstrators gathered near the People’s Assembly building, calling for a review of economic policies and greater public participation in decision-making. Protesters cited rising poverty, unemployment, healthcare challenges and increasing living costs among their main concerns.
Similar demonstrations were reported in provinces including Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor, Rural Damascus, Hama, Aleppo, Idlib, Raqqa and Daraa. Some areas saw road blockages and disruptions linked to demands for reversing fuel price increases and reducing their impact on transportation costs and essential goods.
The protests come amid broader economic pressures in Syria, where higher fuel prices have affected transport and raised concerns over further increases in the cost of basic services and commodities.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council reviewed developments in Syria, with UN officials highlighting continued challenges during the country’s transitional phase. The UN called for stronger accountable institutions, broader participation, protection of civic space, progress on transitional justice, humanitarian support and safe, voluntary returns for displaced people.
The United Nations has stressed the need for inclusive political solutions and measures to address economic hardships while maintaining Syria’s territorial unity and supporting stability.
