UK Weather Experts Warn of Possible ‘Blood Rain’ Phenomenon

Meteorological authorities in the United Kingdom have warned that a phenomenon known as “blood rain” could occur in the coming days as a cloud of reddish desert dust moves toward the country.

Media reports, including coverage by the Daily Mail, said a large dust plume originating from the Sahara Desert is currently moving across Europe and heading toward Britain. When this dust mixes with rainfall, the water droplets may appear reddish in color, creating what scientists describe as the “blood rain” effect.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service reported that the large aerosol cloud consists mainly of Saharan dust along with traces of smoke produced by seasonal biomass burning in tropical parts of Africa.

According to Mark Parrington, a senior scientist at the Copernicus monitoring center, the dust plume is expected to pass at high altitudes over southern England and the English Channel. If rainfall occurs at the same time, wet dust deposits may reach the ground.

Scientists note that the phenomenon is not unusual, as strong winds in the upper atmosphere can transport Saharan dust across long distances, sometimes reaching northwestern Europe.

The dust cloud is expected to reach British skies early next week and could linger until Wednesday. The most noticeable effect may be a thin layer of dust left on cars and exposed surfaces after the rain dries.
