Study Finds European Youth Support for Democracy Slipping Amid Political Shifts

Only about half of young people in France and Spain believe democracy is the best form of government, with support even lower in Poland, according to a new YouGov survey for the Tui Foundation. The study, conducted in April and May among more than 6,700 respondents aged 16–26, found that just 57% of Europe’s generation Z prefer democracy over other systems.

Germany showed the strongest support at 71%, while Poland lagged at 48%. Around 21% said they would accept authoritarian rule under certain circumstances, with Italy highest at 24% and Germany lowest at 15%. Nearly one in ten did not care whether their country was democratic.

Many respondents expressed concern that democracy is under threat, with 48% fearing their system is endangered. Rising far-right support among youth, economic struggles, and geopolitical shifts, including Trump’s return and China’s rise, were noted as influencing factors.

Despite criticism of the EU’s complexity and perceived lack of democracy, two-thirds still want their country to remain in the bloc. Climate protection remains a priority, but fewer young people now say it should take precedence over economic growth. The survey highlights growing polarisation and shifting political identities among Europe’s youth.
