EU to adopt digital driving license by 2030

The EU will implement digital driving licenses accessible via mobile devices by the end of 2030, according to a European Commission statement.
This directive aims to enhance road safety, harmonize driver suitability requirements, and standardize probation periods for novice drivers.
An EU-wide accompanied driving program for those aged 17 and older will also be introduced. Physical licenses will remain available, with a 10-year validity for identity card use and 15 years for driving. Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized that these updates will modernize the licensing system and help reduce road fatalities, supporting the Vision Zero goal.
