World’s First Green Ammonia Plant Opens in Denmark

A groundbreaking green ammonia plant has officially opened in Ramme, Denmark, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy production, New Atlas reported yesterday. Operated by Danish firms Topsoe, Skovgaard Energy, and Vestas, the facility can produce 5,000 tons of green ammonia annually, entirely powered by solar and wind energy. This innovative approach is expected to prevent 8,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The plant utilizes advanced technology to optimize the electrolysis and ammonia synthesis processes, adapting to fluctuations in renewable energy generation. As global reliance on gray ammonia, which contributes to 1.2% of carbon emissions, continues, this facility represents a crucial shift toward eco-friendly alternatives.

Green ammonia serves as a direct substitute in fertilizer production and offers potential for safe hydrogen transport and energy-efficient fuel. With ongoing projects like FuelPositive’s scalable green ammonia system in Canada, the future of sustainable ammonia production looks promising, paving the way for broader adoption worldwide.
