Rising Islamophobia Fuels Anxiety Among Young Muslims in Australia
————————————
Young Muslims across Australia are reporting increased fear and alienation amid a rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric and the recent electoral success of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party, according to The Guardian.

Seventeen-year-old Brisbane student Burak said Hanson’s controversial “burqa stunt” and the party’s anti-Islam statements left him feeling disrespected and unsafe in public spaces. Other students reported similar concerns, noting that Islamophobic incidents have surged nationwide since October 2023, including attacks at Ramadan iftar events and threatening letters sent to mosques in Sydney.

Hanson’s party recently won more than 22% of the primary vote in South Australia, amplifying fears among the Muslim community. School leaders, including Ali Kadri of the Islamic College of Brisbane, warned that political rhetoric is influencing children’s sense of belonging, leaving many young Muslims feeling “alienated within their own country.”

Experts say this environment risks normalizing discrimination, negatively affecting mental health and the social participation of Muslim youth across Australia.
