UN stresses importance of global solidarity to combat climate emergency

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the importance of global solidarity to combat the climate emergency and other current or emerging global challenges, during his visit to Vietnam to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership in the United Nations.

According to the United Nations Information Center, Guterres said: “We are facing the risk of new pandemics, we are facing climate change and inequality in the world, there is only one way to be able to not be defeated by these challenges, and that is if we join the efforts, if we come together.”  That is why we need to feel that there is real solidarity.”

The UN Secretary-General referred to the Vietnamese Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and highlighted the critical role of disaster preparedness for all governments.

Guterres stressed that the goal is to have early warning systems in all countries within five years “to end the tragedy of people dying, destroying livelihoods, because people were not aware that a tragedy was about to happen.”

He added, “When we have an early warning system we know something terrible is coming, we have time to move people to safe places and protect them.”
