ASEAN Diplomats Express Concern Over Iran War Impact on Energy, Trade

Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have voiced “deep concern” over the impact of the Iran war, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and disruptions to global energy supplies and maritime trade routes.

At an ASEAN summit in Manila, Philippines, on Tuesday, regional diplomats warned that the crisis could threaten economic stability in Southeast Asia, where many countries rely heavily on oil imports from Gulf states. ASEAN members are discussing possible oil-sharing mechanisms to reduce the impact of supply shortages and rising energy prices.

The conflict has already contributed to higher fuel and gas costs across the region, affecting manufacturing, exports, and economic growth. The Philippines has declared a national energy emergency as it seeks alternative sources of fuel.

ASEAN ministers said the developments risk weakening diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully. The summit is also addressing other regional challenges, including Myanmar’s ongoing conflict and disputes in the South China Sea involving China and several Southeast Asian nations.
