Islamic Groups Condemn Anti-Muslim Opposition to Proposed Mosque in New Mexico

Opposition to the construction of a proposed mosque in the U.S. state of New Mexico has drawn criticism from Islamic organizations and civil rights advocates, who are calling for respect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, some comments made during a public review of the mosque project went beyond ordinary planning or zoning concerns and included hostile remarks directed at Muslims and the Islamic community.

Civil rights advocates warned that public debate over houses of worship must not be shaped by religious prejudice, stressing that Muslim communities have the same constitutional right to establish places of worship as other faith groups in the United States.

The Albuquerque Journal also reported that some opponents of the mosque raised concerns not only about urban planning issues, but also about future generations being exposed to Islam and Islamic symbols.

Islamic organizations said such arguments reflect a troubling pattern of Islamophobic rhetoric and urged local officials to evaluate the project based on standard legal, zoning, and community planning criteria rather than religious bias.
