New York Mayor Criticises Arrest of Venezuela’s President
………….
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has condemned the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, voicing serious concern over reported plans to hold them in federal detention in the city. He described the move as a violation of both US federal law and international legal norms, warning of broader implications.
In an official statement, Mamdani said he had been briefed on what he described as a US military operation that led to the detention of Maduro and his wife. He characterised the action as a unilateral assault on a sovereign state, arguing that it constitutes an act of war and breaches established international law.
The mayor also warned that the situation could have direct repercussions for New York’s large Venezuelan community, stressing that regime-change efforts abroad can affect local communities at home. He said his administration is prioritising the safety of all city residents while closely monitoring developments following the US president’s announcement of a major strike against Venezuela.
